“Lebanon Debate”
As the school year is almost coming to an end, many parents were taken aback by the new school fees for the upcoming academic year 2024-2025. School administrations informed parents of the significant increases, which came as a shock and hardship for many.
According to sources, the increase in fees ranges from 50% to over 120% in some schools. This comes off as if the economic crisis has come to an end, with some schools returning fees to pre-crisis levels in 2019. This move contradicts legal regulations as the official fees are not set before January.
Lama al-Tawil, head of the Union of Parents' Committees in Private Schools, said that “there is a concerted effort among school administrations to revert fees to pre-crisis levels, as if the economic crisis in Lebanon had disappeared.”
Speaking to Lebanon Debate, Tawil expressed concern over the profit-oriented approach of school administrations, despite their non-profit status.
She highlighted the remarks made by Catholic Schools Secretary-General Father Youssef Nasr, who pointed out that any additional $100 per teacher equals a $300 increase in fees per student. This calculation, based on statistics showing a higher number of teachers than students, was deemed abnormal and wrong.
Tawil criticized the Ministry of Education for failing to address fee increases, holding Minister Abbas al-Halabi accountable for his absence and inaction.
She urged parents to unite and reject the fee increase, advising them not to make any payments until the budget is finalized. Tawil reassured parents that “according to the law, students are considered registered even without a statement from the school administration; there is no need for fear.”
