Sharafeddine: the only obstructionist in the Syrian file is…

The Minister of the Displaced in the caretaker government, Issam Sharafeddine, affirms that “the European promises related to the Syrian displaced file are unreliable.”

In his talk to “Sputnik”, he revealed that “the main issue in this file lies in the refusal of the UNHCR to hand over the data of the displaced people in Lebanon."

Sharafeddine held “the “unjust” Western blockade on Syria responsible for the current situation of the file. This blockade targets Syrians under the pretext of the absence of democracy in their country. This is an unrealistic excuse, so we demand that the sea be legally opened for the displaced and distributed fairly among the countries of the world. We also demand fair compensation, especially since Lebanon has borne enormous burdens for 13 years."

Regarding the importance of forming a tripartite committee to resolve this file, he said: "Lebanon made the demand, which Syria accepted. The sole obstacle lies with the UNHCR, while Western powers operate under the assumption of being guardians of Beirut and Damascus. Such actions shall be condemned."

Sharafeddine criticized Western interference, suggesting a US-led influence over European countries.

He announced that "the displacement file is the first item on the agenda of the Council of Ministers today. Moreover, the Brussels conference's failure to find a solution underscores the validity of our decision to coordinate with the Syrian government. Consequently, the delay is of Lebanese nature rather than Syrian.”
