“Lebanon Debate”
Amid the departure of the French envoy to Lebanon, Jean Yves Le Drian, who holds a comprehensive report detailing the local authorities' positions on the presidential file, signs have emerged of a possible American visit.
It is anticipated that a member of his delegation, or possibly Amos Hochstein himself, will visit Lebanon prior to the American-French meeting, which will bring together French President Emmanuel Macron, and US President Joe Biden in Normandy.
A well-informed political source revealed to “Lebanon Debate” that the American envoy will also present a similar report to the American administration regarding the situation along the southern Lebanese borders and the presidential file.
When asked about the 2 reports, the source said: “The American-French summit will address numerous important regional topics, including the situation in Lebanon, albeit briefly. The summit will mainly focus on the war in Gaza and Syria, in addition to the displaced Syrians.”
The sources also considered that Le Drian’s report will focus on the presidential file to ensure the effective administration of Lebanese institutions and to maintain the necessary level of stability to preserve that Lebanon’s political “trait” remains intact.
Meanwhile, the American report will tackle the importance of stability on the southern borders with Israel and urge for a security agreement.
Hence, both Le Drian and Hochstein are working on delivering their report in time before the Normandy summit, albeit with different priorities.
On one hand, as observed recently, le Drian recommended some Lebanese politicians to hurry in the presidential elections, turning a blind eye on the French proposal for easing tensions in the south.
On the other hand, according to the source, Hochstein will propose a security agreement that is currently under review by the American side.
