The idea of students obtaining a card enabling them to sit for school exams in the final semester of the academic year has raised concerns among parents. Without this card, students are ineligible to take exams unless their school fees are fully paid.
Father Youssef Nasr, the Secretary-General of Catholic Schools, elaborated on this card in an interview with Lebanon Debate. He clarified that school administrations are trying to find a way to collect the remaining fees from parents to fulfill financial obligations for the upcoming three summer months. This is particularly significant because, during these months, direct communication between parents and the school is often limited. Therefore, this card ensures the fulfillment of financial obligations during the summer period, without compromising students' academic rights.
He emphasized that this card is one of several strategies schools may employ to compel parents to settle financial dues. Schools face significant financial pressure during the summer as they must meet obligations to teachers, whether in Lebanese pounds or dollars.
Father Youssef Nasr highlighted that “schools are facing a challenge as they need to secure summer obligations while safeguarding students' educational rights. Schools aim to pressure parents to fulfill financial responsibilities without detriment to students' learning opportunities.”
He stresses that “the aim is not to deprive students of their final school exams. The objective is to secure financial obligations.” He then underscores that “students should not be victims of the dynamic between their school and parents. Both parties must fulfill their duties to maintain a balanced educational environment and adhere to the stipulations outlined in Law No. 515.
