A Decisive Weekend
“Lebanon Debate” - Political Analyst
National Moderation bloc representatives are eagerly awaiting the outcomes of their colleagues' efforts within the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) and the Progressive Socialist Party concerning the presidential dossier. They have granted them until the week's end, with hopes for them to score a progress no matter how small.
However, the past 48 hours have brought little optimism, with no promising developments in the representatives' movements. Conditions remain unsuitable for a truce on the Gaza front, while tensions in the south continue to escalate.
National Moderation bloc sources attribute this escalation to Netanyahu's confusion following the release of four hostages and the deaths of eight. A failure that could push him to seek compensation elsewhere, possibly in Lebanon.
Moderation sources disclosed to “Lebanon Debate” that despite initiatives, FPM leader Gebran Bassil has not put forth any new proposals, reinforcing the belief that the crisis will persist. Meanwhile, the Progressive Socialist Party seeks help while the country is in need of their help.
France has reportedly requested assistance from parliamentary blocs closely aligned with its government, but it remains uncertain whether progress can be achieved before a Gaza ceasefire.
When asked about post-truce in Gaza plans, sources emphasized the urgent need to elect a president.
Failure to do so could prolong the vacuum until the next American, Israeli, and Iranian elections. If this happens, the presidential file will enter a dark tunnel and Lebanon will be the last concern of all foreign policies.
The end of the week will draw new horizons for the next step, with ongoing cooperation between the National Moderation and the two blocs.
However, the sources do not have many high hopes in regards to this week’s initiatives, revealing that a consensus over one presidential candidate is very hard and complicated.
