“Lebanon Debate”
Road accidents are one of the leading causes of death in Lebanon. Victims of car incidents are increasing by the day due to the recklessness of the Lebanese and their failures to take traffic laws seriously.
Mohamed Shams El-Din, a statistical expert at the International Information Center, confirmed to Lebanon Debate that in the first five months of 2024, the number of road accidents and their resultant injuries and fatalities has significantly increased compared to 2023.
He stated that “we notice a 20% increase in car accidents. If we want to talk numbers, during the first five months of 2024, the number of car accidents was recorded at 1127, surpassing last year's 857 accidents during the same period."
The statistical expert added, "The death toll rose from 151 to 157, marking a 4% increase, while the number of injured escalated from 900 to 1,182, reflecting a surge of 24.8%."
He emphasized that several factors contributed to this surge, including "lack of control, speeding, poor road conditions, lack of nighttime lighting, non-adherence to traffic laws by citizens, and lack of enforcement by security forces as there are many instances of intoxicated driving among some citizens." Consequently, Shams al-Din expressed concerns that this upward trend may persist in the forthcoming months.
