“Lebanon Debate”
Many repercussions followed the speech of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hasan Nasrallah, who threatened Cyprus. He warned the island in case Israel decided to use its airports and ports to attack Lebanon. One notable repercussion was an opposing reaction involving the Beirut airport, where Hezbollah allegedly hides and transports its weapons. This reaction aimed to serve as a deterrent, linking both the future and the fate of the airport to any other ports or airports the Resistance might use.
In practical terms, this is not the first time the airport has faced similar allegations. However, this is the first instance where a political party (the Lebanese Forces) has leveraged such allegations to justify their stances. This has added internal dimensions to the accusations and enabled this party to use them to incite against Hezbollah. The Lebanese Forces' use and politicization of these positions now hold them accountable for any potential consequences resulting from an attack on the airport.
Furthermore, using a report from the British journal Telegraph, known for publishing false information, is not wise. This journal is not a credible security source in the airport; therefore, it does not make realistic or reliable accusations.
However, in an interview with Lebanon Debate, the accuracy of these claims was questioned by security sources, who were surprised by the content of the publications. They underscored that the airport remains accessible to everyone without restrictions. The gravity of these accusations led Ali Hamiya, the caretaker Minister of Public Works and the overseer of the airport, to invite the media for an on-site inspection. This step aims to verify the validity of the allegations. They are a form of psychological war that needs a response to clarify the situation. Moreover, a media campaign should take place to counter any misunderstandings.
The Israeli enemy's objective appears clear. Initially, it aims to portray Beirut's airport as a "suspicious site unfit for operation". Then, to rationalize potential targeting during future military actions or in response to further escalations in southern Lebanon. It is worth mentioning that these accusations serve proponents advocating for a new airport in Lebanon, suggesting that they refrain from utilizing the current facility under the pretext that it falls under Hezbollah's influence.
