Assassination Attempt Shakes Akkar

Not a day passes in the town of Bizal in Akkar without the intervention of the army or Information Branch in order to apprehend gunmen. This situation stems from longstanding familial tensions among the town's residents, often escalating into the use of military-grade weapons to resolve minor disputes.

However, a significant incident occurred early Sunday morning involving Sheikh Ahmad Rachid Mousa, the son-in-law of the Grand Mufti of Akkar, Sheikh Zaid Bakkar Zakaria, who narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.

According to details obtained by Lebanon Debate, masked gunmen fired shots at Sheikh Ahmad's residence, car, and the stairs leading to Al-Nour Mosque, where he was ascending for morning prayers. Thanks to divine intervention, he sustained no physical harm. The property was the only thing damaged.

Based on the information of Lebanon Debate, the incident involving Sheikh Ahmed appears to be a targeted attack or a message aimed at him. This is despite his neutral stance in relation to all residents of the town. The incident has roots in past family conflicts, notably the tragic killing of young Othman Othman by two members of the Mousa family. Efforts were made by prominent figures such as Mufti of Akkar Sheikh Zaid Bakkar Zakaria and Supreme Islamic Sharia Council member Ali Tlais to seek justice and reconciliation. They urged for the perpetrators to be held over. However, their father declined to comply with these requests.

Sources inside the town believe that “the protection current and former MPs have for factions within the town contributed to heightened unrest. From this perspective, the attackers wanted to assassinate Sheikh Ahmad in order to incite discord in the community.”

The motive behind the attempt reportedly stems from Sheikh Ahmad's outspoken views on local affairs, which he has expressed privately and in phone messages.

Following the incident, Sheikh Ahmad filed a complaint against unidentified individuals, although the attackers fled the scene. Due to the early hour of the attack and their masks, they couldn’t be identified.”

Security forces have inspected the scene, interviewed Sheikh Ahmad, and launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators.
