“Let the Brotherhood Rule”, Geagea Once Said

Anyone observing the funeral of the Islamic Group's military commander, Ayman Ghatma, including the display of military weaponry by Sheikh Ali al-Ghazzawi, the Mufti of the Bekaa and Zahle, would see a clear reflection of the shortsightedness of Christian leaders. On top of the list are Samir Geagea of the Lebanese Forces and Gebran Bassil of the Free Patriotic Movement. These leaders spared no effort to undermine the Sunni moderation represented by Saad Hariri and the Future Movement. In return, they maintained a deafening silence in response to the increasing influence of the "Dawn Forces," the military wing of the Islamic Group.

No one should underestimate the rise of the Islamic Group and its growing influence among Sunnis sympathetic to Gaza's plight. Furthermore, the military prowess of the "Dawn Forces" backed by Hezbollah, has attracted Sunni youth, who are currently suffering setbacks at security and political levels. This has resulted in the arbitrary detention of numerous Islamists under arrest in Roumieh without trial.

According to security reports, the Islamic Group is expected to secure more than 10 parliamentary seats in the next session. This will be the case if Hariri's absence persists and Arab nations continue to turn a blind eye to the Brotherhood's expansion in Lebanon, especially Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Including MPs the Brotherhood can obtain, there could be over eight Sunni parliamentarians close to the axis of resistance, consolidating more than 20 Sunni seats out of 27 in parliament.

Geagea once stated, "Let the Brotherhood rule," but now faces the reality of the "Dawn Forces" and "Saraya of the Resistance". Meanwhile, Bassil has tarnished Hariri's political standing, giving it a “one-way ticket”.

However, the question remains: Is it in the interest of Geagea, Bassil, and the Christian community to witness the emergence of a Hezbollah-like Sunni force? What practical steps can be taken to address this situation before it is too late?
