“Lebanon Debate”

The German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Annalena Baerbock, briefly visited Lebanon. What did she carry along? Are there any new threats or attempts to calm the situation?

Political writer and analyst Wassim Bazzi told Lebanon Debate that the intimidation of a war in Lebanon has decreased in foreign rhetoric. He made this observation following the brief visit of the German Minister and her meetings with Lebanese authorities.

Minister Baerbock's demeanor today starkly contrasted with her previous visit to Lebanon, during which she conveyed warnings and threats. This time, she showed greater composure in her demeanor and language, demonstrating increased experience and a careful approach to avoid any mishaps. It was evident that her message was not intended to threaten Lebanon. He noticed Germany's commitment to de-escalating tensions in the northern Palestinian region.

The German minister's visit focused on assessing the situation on the ground. Regarding her inability to meet with Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nabih Berri, reports circulated that he declined to meet with her due to Germany's stance on the conflicts involving Gaza and Lebanon. Minister Baerbock's visit was brief, spanning only a few hours in the afternoon. Berri reportedly expressed willingness to meet her if she could extend her visit to two days, but this didn't align with her schedule.

Speaker Berri suggested that Baerbock meet with the head of the Lebanese parliament's foreign affairs committee instead. However, this meeting did not take place.
