“Lebanon Debate”
After a two-year hiatus, the Board of Directors of the Traffic Management Organization has decided to allow 57 employees from the Vehicle Registration Center to return to work. This decision was made based on the legal opinion of Nisrine Machmouchi, President of the Civil Service Council, aimed at revitalizing the Traffic Organization's operations and revenue collection, and facilitating services for Lebanese citizens pending judicial rulings. Minister of Interior and Municipalities Bassam Mawlawi ratified the decision, following the suspension of these employees in November 2022 on charges of corruption and bribery.
Some employees faced arrests for illicit enrichment and misappropriation of public funds. After the expiration of their legal detention period, they were released on bail and residency bonds, with their cases still under consideration by the Criminal Court.
According to information obtained by "Lebanon Debate," these employees were expected to resume work at the beginning of the month. However, as of now, none of them have returned to their workplaces.
The return of these 57 employees is anticipated to accelerate the process of pending transactions and files. It will enhance productivity and operational efficiency. Nevertheless, this measure alone will not completely resolve the crisis.
Despite the challenges, the current operational status is seen as preferable to shutting down the facility, akin to other state institutions, even with operations progressing at a slower pace.
