“Lebanon Debate”
Beirut has maintained its low ranking on the Arab and world lists of quality of life indicators, despite a small improvement in the cost of living, purchasing power, and rental homes. However, this improvement was rather limited in the international ranking of cost indicators.
Will this poor ranking reflect negatively and push Beirut off the international tourist map? In this context, economic expert and member of the Economic, Social, and Environmental Council, Anis Abou Diab, said in an interview with Lebanon Debate: “I don’t think Beirut will be removed from the world tourism map because it is a city with a long history, a good geographical location, and special services. However, I do think this ranking will reflect negatively.”
He also clarified: “I am not surprised by this ranking because Lebanon has not experienced peace for the past four years.” He added that many factors contribute to this ranking, including noise from electric motors, environmental pollution, and the high cost of generating energy, which have decreased the quality of life in Beirut. Additionally, the unorganized solar panels on balconies and building roofs contribute to this decline.
Abou Diab also revealed that many streetlights are not working, and the security situation has worsened. All of these factors make Beirut unsafe for tourists, both in terms of security and environment.
He also mentioned the high cost of living, noting that Beirut was ranked the 6th most expensive Arab city. He confirmed that the high cost of Lebanese hotels is two ranks below hotels in Dubai, which is indescribable. He added: “We understand hotel owners, but there is difficulty in competitiveness during this time.”
He also talked about the increase in the prices of goods, saying that they are rising day by day. From May 2023 to May 2024, inflation was around 51%. These prices are inadequate for tourists due to the high costs, in addition to issues related to shopping.
Abou Diab concluded: “Beirut, once a tourist attraction, is now uncomfortable for visitors. Efforts should be made to reinforce factors that could provide a secure and adequate life, ensuring that tourists do not face dire situations when visiting Beirut.”
