“Lebanon Debate”
On Thursday, the Executive Council of the Ogero Employees’ Union held a press conference outlining their response to what they describe as a defined plan to liquidate Ogero. This plan allegedly aims to seize the public telecommunications facility, which has become Lebanon's vital lifeline for both workers and residents.
Emily Nassar, president of the Ogero Employees' Union, expressed concerns to Lebanon Debate, "This liquidation aims to strip Ogero employees of their rights. Our recent actions were a clear message, raising our voices to protect our organization amidst challenging circumstances."
Nassar highlighted the immediate dangers facing Ogero's employees, "Today, we are facing threats, and we will mobilize all efforts to confront them. We will monitor this issue step by step in order to assess developments. If our demands are not met, we will consider resorting to strike action and other surprising measures."
She raised the question, "Who benefits from constraining Ogero and disrupting its crucial role in providing public telecommunications services to the Lebanese people? It is evident that deliberate budgetary restrictions are undermining the sector. Therefore, we demand the release of funds to continue our work operations and provide services to citizens."
Nassar pointed out ongoing issues with fund transfers, stating, "Injustice persists with delays in the release of funds, particularly for maintenance and operational needs. Salaries are irregularly disbursed, and if this trend continues, it will lead to the institution’s collapse."
She underscored the dedication of Ogero employees despite challenges, "Employees at Ogero shoulder responsibilities and remain deeply committed, despite enduring difficult circumstances. However, continued austerity measures and rights violations are depriving them of their rights. At the very least, they deserve to have their demands met and to live dignified lives with their families.”
