The Syrian presidency mourned Luna al-Shibl, the media advisor to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, on Friday following her involvement in a tragic car accident.
In a statement released on the "X" platform, the Syrian presidency expressed sorrow, stating, "The Syrian presidency mourns the passing of advisor Luna al-Shibl, who tragically lost her life today in a car accident."
The political and media office of the Syrian presidency informed the "SANA" agency that Special Advisor Luna al-Shibl was involved in a car accident on a road leading to Damascus on Tuesday afternoon.
The office clarified that the accident caused her vehicle to veer off the road, resulting in severe injuries. She was promptly transferred to Al-Shami Hospital, one of Damascus's renowned hospitals.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Luna al-Shibl was taken to Al-Shami Hospital in Damascus, where her condition was described as critical due to a head injury.
Reports also mentioned that Luna al-Shibl's brother had been arrested in Damascus a week earlier.
Born in Sweida in 1975, Luna al-Shibl was a prominent Syrian media professional. Since November 2020, she had served as Special Advisor to the Presidency of the Syrian Republic.
Luna al-Shibl held a master's degree in journalism and media. She began her career at Syrian TV and later worked at Al-Jazeera until 2010. She also represented the Syrian government delegation at the Geneva II conference in June 2014.
In November 2020, President Bashar al-Assad appointed her as a special advisor to the Presidency of the Republic.
She is one of the individuals targeted by sanctions imposed by the United States concerning Syria.
On a personal note, Luna al-Shibl was previously married to Lebanese media personality Sami Kleib. Following their separation, she married Ammar Saati, head of the National Union of Syrian Students and a member of the People's Assembly.
