“Lebanon Debate”
Minister of Information, Ziad Makary, in the caretaker government, strongly condemned the assault on journalist Rami Naim by a group of individuals while he was at Starbucks in Verdun on Tuesday.
In an interview with “Lebanon Debate”, the minister stated, "What happened to Naim is completely unacceptable."
Makary emphasized that he is actively pursuing the matter with the Prosecutor General at the Cassation Court in Beirut, asserting that such actions are unacceptable regardless of whether Naim is a journalist. He stressed that it is unacceptable for anyone to resort to violence due to differences in ideas or political positions.
Makary highlighted that this incident is not unprecedented, noting that the ministry receives weekly complaints about similar assaults on journalists.
He also clarified that he is doing his best in following up with any journalist or media personality while coordinating with various security agencies, without the need for public condemnation statements.
The minister alarmed that the ministry is working on all of these cases without making any noise and away from media eyes.
Makary underscored that the ministry works on these cases discreetly, away from media attention.
He also disclosed that the ministry is committed to safeguarding freedom of expression, according to existing laws to regulate complaints and related matters in this context.
