During the last few days, the Joun village witnessed some turmoil following the resignation of the mayor Georges Makhoul and the appointment of his deputy Hussam Afif Shames El Dine as interim head until new municipal elections are held.
Head of the Joun village, Samir Issa, confirmed in an interview with “Lebanon Debate” that the resignation of the mayor created a sense of unease in the village due to fears about potential crises related to the catholic presence in the region, since the mayor has always been catholic and his deputy Shiite.
He clarified: “After a month of Shames El Dine’s appointment as interim mayor, concerns arose in the village that this position should be held by a catholic. However, the situation calmed down again after discussions with Bishop Elie Bechara Al-Haddad and kaem makam of Mount Lebanon, Marilyn Kahwaji. It is stipulated by the law that the deputy of the mayor can assume the mayor’s duties, hence Shames El Dine will remain as interim mayor until new municipal elections take place.”
Issa emphasized that the members of the municipality all agree to run the affairs of the municipality as stated by the law, and the situation will remain as it is until it goes back to its normal course after the elections.
He also added: “We do not have the intention to break the traditions of the village, hence the mayor’s deputy will not run for candidacy in the upcoming elections.”
The head of the village concluded: “Joun is a model Lebanese village, known for its diversity. We hope that the next phase will bring positive developments and lead to a solution that preserves Joun's rich history.”
