“Lebanon Debate”
Amid the socioeconomic, living, and security crises faced by the Lebanese people, the suicide rate has surged, reaching 170 cases over the past year.
What was the rate during the first quarter of 2024, and what are factors behind these cases?
In this context, Mohammad Chamseddeine, research analyst at Information International, revealed to “Lebanon Debate” that the number of suicide cases during the first quarter of 2024 was 45: 10 cases were recorded in January, 14 in February, 8 in March and 14 cases were registered in April.
However, Chamseddeine pointed out that during the same period last year, there were 50 cases.
The researcher considered this decrease to be insignificant as it is still the beginning of the year, and the economic and social situation has not changed much.
He also stated: “45 cases in the first 4 months of this year are a big number. The consecutive crises that Lebanon is going through are the reason behind these cases. At the start of the crisis 2019, people showed resilience and were able to cope, but as the crisis prolonged, suicide has become an escape from the harsh reality faced by the Lebanese."
Chamseddeine suggested that the individual who commits suicide may suffer from a certain weakness in his personality which pushes him to seek an escape from his problems.
It should be noted that many cases go unreported; hence, the actual number could far exceed the official numbers.
