“Lebanon Debate”
Lebanese Forces Leader Samir Geagea anticipated the summit between US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron by sending a letter to the latter. However, the content of the letter is still subject to analysis, so what was the purpose behind it?
Informed sources confirm to “Lebanon Debate” that the letter primarily focuses on the issue of the Syrian presence. It highlights the scale of this presence in Lebanon, where Syrians make up 40% of the population. Through this comparison, the sources warn of the danger posed by this percentage. The following question was then raised: If such a percentage existed in France, what would have happened?
Additionally, the letter addressed the Lebanese economy and the competition posed by the Syrian labor force to the Lebanese workforce. It highlights the negative impacts it has on the economy, citing Lebanon’s substantial losses amounting to billions due to the refugees' use of its infrastructure.
The letter considers that the Syrians in Lebanon are not mere refugees. They are illegally residing in this country. The party leader calls upon the EU to halt any assistance to them in Lebanon and instead should provide them with aid upon their return to Syria.
Regarding whether the French president will positively receive the message, the sources clarify that the Lebanese Forces are doing their part because they are committed to the rule of the constitution and the law. He emphasized that their stance remains unwavering regardless of any shifts in others' positions.
