The army command took action following the distribution of traffic facilitation cards by the MP Walid Wajih al-Baarini issued by his personal security apparatus and approved by the parliament. Such action prompted the army commander, General Joseph Aoun, to issue on May 20 a telegram requesting the confiscation of the cards and the arrest of their holders if found in possession of military weapons or illegally passing.
The telegram indicated "MP Walid Wajih Al-Baarini is distributing traffic facilitation cards issued by his office - the Security and Protection Service, with the intention of facilitating tasks for their holders and offering necessary assistance." It requested the following measures to be taken:
1. Recipients are instructed to disseminate to their respective units that possession of this card does not authorize the holder to carry a firearm or to use an unauthorized vehicle.
2. This telegram shall take immediate effect upon issuance.
The telegram was accompanied by copies of the cards issued by MP al-Baarini's security apparatus.
In an interview with Lebanon Debate, MP al-Baarini stated that "the decision of the army commander is highly prudent," emphasizing his adherence to state decisions.
He clarified that "the card serves as an identification card and not a passage card, indicating that its holder is employed in his office."
To dispel any misunderstandings regarding his stance, al-Baarini affirmed that "the decision of the army commander is important, and I fully support it."
