“Lebanon Debate”

With the official exams for graduating students approaching, uncertainty still looms in the Ministry of Education amid controversial information circulating, about the possibility of cancelling these exams due to the expansion of the area of heavy bombings witnessed in the south.

In this context, Nesreen Shahine, head of the retired teachers committee in public education, highlighted in an interview with “Lebanon Debate” that behind the scenes at the Ministry of Education, there is a lack of capacity to conduct these exams due to financing issues and the ongoing conflict in the south.

She also emphasized the need to treat the 800 students in the border areas differently, suggesting either a special exam or an exemption certificate.

Shahine added: “MPs of the Amal movement and Hezbollah were the ones who opposed the idea of separating students in the south from the rest, pressuring the minister to change his decision, and conduct unified exams for all students with optional materials. Consequently, the minister issued several decrees throughout the school year, only to backtrack due to political pressure.”

Shahine described the minister as a man devoid of free will, since he retracted the decrees, he had initially issued due to political pressure.

She added: “The minister of Education is absent today, amid all the news circulating about cancelling the official exams. If the decision were truly his, he should step up and announce the date of the exams and commence preparations."
