A new crisis strikes every day, as the Lebanese are already struggling to provide their most basic needs. These crises are never limited to one area but to all Lebanese territories. However, one region in particular seems to be struggling the most due to an environmental crisis.

In an interview with “Lebanon Debate” Bar Elias mayor, Ahmad Chehab, highlighted that Lebanon suffers from many crises, namely in the health, social, administrative, and economic sectors, hence the many challenges that the country is facing, as the pollution crisis is not only limited to Bar Elias but to other regions as well.

Chehab emphasized that addressing the pollution crisis falls within the purview of the municipality, yet it operates under severe limitations. Alongside Bar Elias, eight other municipalities in central Bekaa have been disbanded and placed under the governor's jurisdiction, who cannot fulfill all municipal duties. Even functioning municipalities face financial distress, as their employees cannot even afford their daily needs.

The mayor also added that there are many obstacles hindering the pollution crisis from being solved in Bar Elias, such as the lack of fuel for garbage trucks, and the refusal of displaced Syrians to work following the decision issued regarding their departure.

Chehab concluded: “The main problem is that the infrastructure was designed for a population of 40,000, however, it currently serves 200,000 residents. This infrastructure will never be enough as long as we suffer from suffer pollution, sewage, electricity, and water crises. We hope today that the government will reassume its role in addressing these crises.”
