“Lebanon Debate”
Numerous scenarios come to mind when discussing the negotiations between the militant group of Hamas and Israel, facilitated by Egyptian Qatari mediators. What will the future hold for the region, a sustainable or permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip? Will the war escalate further, or will the parties adhere to Joe Biden’s plan? The implementation of the US president’s plan, aimed at achieving a final agreement to end the Israeli war on Gaza, was met with demands for amendments from Hamas. In response to these demands, Israel accused Hamas of rejecting the US proposal.
Amidst negotiations led by Qatari and Egyptian mediators, in coordination with the US, efforts persist to determine whether an agreement can be reached to end the conflict in Gaza.
Walid Kilani, Hamas spokesman in Beirut, affirmed to Lebanon Debate that Hamas remained positive throughout the negotiation process, despite Israeli attacks on Rafah and resulting massacres.
In response to the question surrounding the proposed amendments and Israeli allegations of Hamas rejecting the US proposal to end the war on Gaza, Kilani clarified that Hamas did not outright reject the proposal. He accused Israel of spreading misinformation about Hamas's stance, altering the proposed agreement's narrative.
Kilani emphasized that Hamas's response to mediators was clear and only consisted of a few amendments. However, he accused the enemy of distorting reality and making baseless accusations to avoid reaching an agreement.
Furthermore, Hamas's amendment demands centered on achieving a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, complete withdrawal of occupying forces from the Gaza Strip, reconstruction efforts, and a prisoner exchange.
