Presidential Initiatives: Mere Theatrics

“Lebanon Debate”

Despite several local presidential initiatives launched by the Democratic Gathering Party, the Free Patriotic Movement, and the National Moderation Bloc to end the presidential vacuum, none have made any progress or broken the deadlock.

Political journalist and author Asaad Bechara confirmed during an interview with “Lebanon Debate” that all of the presidential initiatives are but a waste of time and a mockery, since the decision actually lies in Hezbollah’s hands.

He described the current blocs and parties launching initiatives as deluding themselves with illusory attempts, knowing they will not succeed. Their actions are aimed at buying time and manipulating the emotions of the Lebanese.

Bechara also considered that Lebanon can only see presidential elections if Hezbollah wants so, through international communication and an Arab coverage to elect Marada leader Sleiman Frangieh or anyone similar.

He also added that the presidential file will remain frozen as long as the war in Gaza is still raging, making all efforts to separate this file from Gaza doomed to failure.

The author also revealed that unless all parties succumb b to Hezbollah and elect Frangieh, no progress will be scored in the file.

When asked about the southern front, Bechara stated that the situation is clear: the rules of engagement have not fundamentally changed, but the timing and field conditions in Gaza and ongoing negotiations have altered the landscape. He emphasized two key factors: Israel's readiness and timing, and the outcome of negotiations regarding security measures.

The author concluded: “When the time is right for Israel, we will witness a change in the war and a bigger confrontation than the one we are witnessing today. If diplomatic efforts and negotiations can be successful, we could potentially see an understanding that could lead to a ceasefire. However, both scenarios depend on events in Gaza, which currently command more attention than the Lebanese borders.”
