A delegation from the founding committee of the “Assembly of the Families of Martyrs, Wounded, and Victims of the Beirut Port Explosion" recently met with the Prosecutor General of Cassation, Judge Jamal al-Hajjar, at the Palace of Justice. The purpose of this meeting is to inquire about the current status of the investigation into the port explosion. Additionally, the gathering wanted to convey its stance on recent developments as the fourth year since the tragedy approaches.

In an interview with Lebanon Debate, the spokesperson of the assembly, Ibrahim Hoteit, stated, "We cannot enter the fourth year with the investigation file still frozen and stagnant."

According to Hoteit, “Judge al-Hajjar conveyed that the legal complexities surrounding the case have prevented progress. He told the families that there are disruptions in the investigative process.”

Hoteit further explained, "We briefed him on the overall atmosphere within the assembly and its objectives. We provided him with some documents, which will be further discussed in our upcoming meeting next week with Judge al-Hajjar." These documents, according to Hoteit, underscore the assembly's position regarding Investigating Judge Tariq al-Bitar's handling of the case. Therefore, the assembly opposes Judge al-Bitar continuing the investigation for several reasons, particularly concerning the discretion used in issuing summonses.

Regarding their next steps, Hoteit hinted at a forthcoming significant development, mentioning, "Today and next week, we will bring a huge volume of files along with a prominent individual who holds crucial documents related to the case, to meet with Judge Bitar next week."
However, Hoteit refrained from disclosing the identity of this person, stating it will be announced soon pending their agreement.

Concerning the controversy surrounding Judge al-Bitar's continuation of the case, Hoteit highlighted, "The dispute between former Public Prosecutor of Cassation, Judge Ghassan Oueidat, and Judge al-Bitar has created a deadlock in the proceedings, for which there is currently no legal resolution." He added that transferring the case to another judge also presents legal complications.
