Ein el-Hilweh camp in Sidon is currently experiencing heightened security tensions following an assassination in the Ras al-Ahmar area, resulting in the death of Yassin Akl, a member of Fatah (political and military organization of Arab Palestinians.)
According to a reliable source within the camp speaking to Lebanon Debate, "The assassinator has held extremist views since his early days, frequently causing disturbances in the camp."
The assassin, an ISIS ideologue, is the son of Jamal Hamad, also a Fatah member in Ein el-Hilweh camp, adding to the gravity of the incident. This has prompted urgent calls in the neighborhood where committees gather, demanding the surrender of the perpetrator. The situation is expected to persist until the handover is completed.
The source anticipates that "an official decision to hand over the assassin will soon be made. Such incidents are not unprecedented. Recently, gunfire was directed at the Lebanese army, resulting in the closure of camp entrances until the culprits surrendered.”
He emphasizes that once the killer is handed over, things will return to normal. It is crucial to avoid escalating tensions in the camp or the southern region. The individuals behind this incident were wielding weapons without regard for the potential consequences, which could lead to further dangerous implications for the camp.”
