“Lebanon Debate”
Several crimes have been committed against dogs in the Bhamdoun area, where they have been poisoned with the internationally banned substance Lannate. Activist and animal rights defender Ghina Nahfawi expresses concern over the ongoing poisoning without any deterrent measures in place. Bhamdoun, once a summer resort, has now become a burial ground for cats, dogs, wild animals, and birds, all victims of Lannate and rat poison.
Nahfawi told Lebanon Debate, “The Bhamdoun municipalities are incapable, reluctant, and sluggish in addressing the issue of stray dogs. The scent of corpses remains a tragic hallmark in Bhamdoun, as peaceful creatures continue to be killed by cruel methods.”
"The municipality of Bhamdoun neglects its responsibilities and threatens activists and animal rights organizations," Nahfawi states. "They have given us a week to remove stray dogs from Bhamdoun, threatening ominous consequences if we fail to comply. Instead of fulfilling its duties, the municipality unjustly holds us accountable."
She warns that anyone capable of stopping these crimes and failing to act becomes an accomplice. Nahfawi emphasizes the need for strict adherence to Animal Welfare Law and Article 12, urging the Ministry of Agriculture to enforce legal measures against animal poisoning.
The activist and animal rights defender calls on Agriculture Minister Abbas Haj Hassan to intervene since municipalities are not doing their job, highlighting the urgency to halt these inhumane acts that are deeply distressing.
