Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Barcelona to protest against excessive tourism and its detrimental impact on residents' lives.
Issues highlighted include the soaring cost of living, steep increases in rental prices, and the transformation of the city into an "unlivable" place.
The protest, which saw participants from approximately 150 organizations, unfolded in Barcelona on Saturday, as reported by various media outlets.
Videos shared on social media captured protesters carrying placards with messages such as "Barcelona is not for sale" and "Tourists, go back to your homes." Some demonstrators were seen using water sprinklers shaped like pistols against certain tourists.
In response to the protests, several restaurants and hotels in Barcelona were reportedly forced to shut down. The city, renowned for its mild climate and distinct culture, annually attracts millions of visitors.
Reuters reported a significant rise in rents in Barcelona and other popular Spanish cities like Madrid, which surged by 18% in June compared to the previous year.
A protester emphasized to Reuters, "The city has completely changed for tourists, and what we want is a city that serves its citizens, not just tourists."
