“Lebanon Debate”
Many Lebanese scheduled appointments to obtain a visa for Cyprus. On Thursday, they woke up to a surprise. Headed to the Embassy of Cyprus, they found the establishment closed with no indication of when it would reopen.
After reviewing the matter with Cypriot Ambassador to Lebanon Maria Hadjitheodosiou, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Elias Bou Saab announced that the embassy had temporarily closed for administrative purposes. They plan on adjusting visa regulations and pricing, and operations will resume the following day.
However, the unexpected closure coincided with Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah's speech, cautioning Cyprus against granting Israeli aircraft access to its airspace in case of a war between Lebanon and Israel. Therefore, this sudden closure confirms without any doubt that the reason behind it was not the ambassador's explanation provided to Bou Saab.
The embassy's failure to notify individuals with pre-scheduled visa appointments about its sudden closure, without indicating when it would reopen, underscores their skepticism. This lack of communication, coupled with staff members admitting they were unaware of the resumption of services, has raised doubts about the embassy's stated administrative reasons for the closure.
Many observers have paused to analyze the sudden move of the embassy. They are questioning the credibility of its technical explanation. It appears to be a direct reaction to the recent warning issued. They believe it reflects Cyprus's displeasure with what it perceives as direct threats directed towards it.
