After Suffering Heavy Losses, a New Agenda Item Emerges

Recent events, especially the tragic suicide of a man in Zgharta, have spurred the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee into action. It prepared a draft law that regulates the gambling sector. This initiative seeks to safeguard the rights of individuals, the state, and gambling establishments within a legal framework.

Acknowledging the prevailing impunity and lack of oversight surrounding the proliferation of gambling offices, Head of the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee, MP Michel Moussa, emphasizes the urgent need for regulatory measures to address the social problems and losses associated with unchecked gambling activities. This absence of control has resulted in notable repercussions leading to detrimental outcomes, such as the tragic suicide incident in Zgharta.

Given this concerning situation, MP Moussa affirms the imperative of addressing the issue. He recognizes that because these platforms are international, it is impossible to eradicate them. However, there is a possibility of implementing effective control measures through proper legalization. This entails the establishment of a regulatory body that sets standards, issues licenses based on specific criteria, and assumes oversight responsibilities.

Moussa believes in the importance of oversight to prevent any wrongdoing. He insists that all companies must meet certain standards to protect people's rights. The government needs to reclaim its due fees that remain uncollected from these establishments.

The Head of the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee also argues for harsh punishments if rules are broken. He repeats how crucial it is to regulate this sector, given that it cannot be completely stopped.

The matter is currently under consideration by joint committees, with further steps contingent upon the stance of parliamentary blocs.
Moussa stresses the significance of this initiative in light of the widespread impunity and grievances stemming from unregulated gambling practices.
