“Lebanon Debate”
Hourly contract professors at the Lebanese University initiated a general and comprehensive boycott of any academic work due to the failure to approve the sabbatical file and the non-payment of promised productivity to contracted professors.
Dr. Mohammad Choker, a committee member, confirmed to "Lebanon Debate" that the committee's announcement was made in response to the absence of a decision on the sabbatical file, which remains a top priority for professors. Additionally, the issue of productivity for contract professors for the first semester of the academic year remains unresolved.
He revealed that the university presidency submitted the productivity file to the Ministry of Education on June 3, but it has yet to be disbursed. Despite the short processing time required, it appears that the funds may not be available, leading to delays in payment by the ministry.
The committee has reached out to all members of the parliamentary education committee and most blocs to garner support for the sabbatical file and to pressure the ministry to pay productivity. However, despite their efforts, contract professors have only received the hourly allowance, while the productivity allowance remains pending.
The situation of the professors is tragic, and the university president, keen to avoid disruptions, is expected to address the issue as it affects both the university and its students.
Despite the professors' efforts to maintain stability throughout the academic year and minimize study disruptions, none of the promises made have been fulfilled. Teachers express disappointment with the Minister of Education for failing to schedule a meeting to address the sabbatical file, citing a lack of progress.
