“Lebanon Debate”
The Court of Audit (COA) is under significant pressure to reconsider its decision regarding the extension of the contract for the company operating the Jiyeh and Zouk Thermal Power Plants. Despite receiving $30 million to activate the power plants, the operating company failed to deliver results.
In this context, Representative Nada Boustani emphasized that the COA should uphold its initial decision, especially since the court had officially announced not to extend the services of the Middle East Power Company (MEP).
In an interview with “Lebanon Debate,” Boustani stated: “The COA is being pressured into extending the MEP's contract by certain individuals.” She also confirmed her commitment to monitoring the situation until its resolution.
Boustani added: “MEP received 31 million euros for its services but failed to fulfill its obligations. This isn't mere speculation; but official data released by the Electricity of France.”
When asked about the fate of the Jiyeh and Zouk power plants if the MEP contract is not extended, the representative clarified that the company didn't operate the plants in the first place. However, the MEP did request bids to be launched promptly. She stressed that succumbing to pressure and extending MEP's contract isn't a viable solution, as the non-operation of these new factories would lead to their downfall.
Boustani concluded: “I do not rule out the possibility that a certain political party is aiding MEP. Why haven’t we seen any political party tackle this important issue, especially considering its discussion in the work and electricity committee?”
