“Lebanon Debate”
Fruit prices are increasingly rising compared to last year, although some prices remain unchanged.
In this context, Antoine Howayek, head of the Lebanese Farmers Association," explains that the significant increase in fruit prices is due to low supply compared to demand. He notes that seasonal fruits like watermelons and melons have maintained acceptable prices, ranging between 25,000 and 30,000 LBP per kilogram. However, the price of peaches has risen because of a poor season affected by cold weather, which reduced production.
Regarding the quality decline of certain fruit varieties, Howayek stated to Lebanon Debate that “there is no manipulation of varieties. All types of fruits are available in Lebanese markets at various prices, you pay for what you get. Some fruits are inexpensive but of lower quality, while others are priced higher due to superior quality.”
The Head of the Lebanese Framers Association further highlighted that “most agricultural seasons have suffered from climate changes and cold weather, resulting in price increases for some varieties while others have stabilized within reasonable limits.”
Howayek expressed concern about the agricultural sector's current state because of “a lack of management, resources, and principles. It's surprising how farmers can continue and persevere under these conditions. As a result, the sector is not experiencing any development or stability. The sector's lack of development and stability is due to the absence of a supportive state. In countries with a functioning state, the agricultural sector is managed and supported by the government. Unfortunately, in Lebanon, it is a sector undermined by political authorities that control everything."
