Turkish streets were unsettled in the past few hours following riots where some Turks vandalized properties belonging to Syrian refugees in Kayseri, home to many refugees who fled the Syrian war.
On Sunday, a group of men vandalized stores and properties owned by Syrians, triggered by the arrest of a Syrian suspect in a harassment case involving a Turkish minor.
Videos circulating on social media showed men breaking into grocery stores, purportedly owned by Syrians, and setting them on fire. Others damaged vehicles and motorcycles in the area using stones and metal tools, chanting slogans such as "We do not want Syrians! We do not want foreigners!"
However, these allegations proved to be false as Turkish authorities confirmed the child involved is Syrian, not Turkish, and the assailant is her cousin who suffers from mental health issues.
Local authorities have arrested the suspect and taken custody of the child.
